MASTER'S & PhD PROGRAM

Distance Learning Program

WELCOME

UC San Diego Distance Learning Program (DLMP) classes are broadcast via Zoom Video-conferencing platform to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) students and employees. Currently, LANL full-time engineers take anywhere between one to three courses per quarter. Along this path, a master’s degree can take as little as one year, to as long as three years. This program is unique in that it utilizes University graduate and extension offices, while remaining independent. LANL employees may take classes and pursue a graduate degree via Zoom distance learning modality while reducing the need to be present on campus. Our goal is to provide the most comprehensive academic experience for those limited by location in their labs.

Students may find information about courses in the UC San Diego General Catalog. Currently, courses are only offered through the Structural Engineering department. Though we offer a wide variety of courses, please work with the Program Coordinator to see which classes are offered via distance learning. Our staff will work with the faculty to arrange for proper administrative and technical support for the course. When you register for a course through the UC San Diego- Distance Learning Master’s Program, you are required to pay the standard UC San Diego tuition or UC San Diego Concurrent Enrollment, through Extension fees for that course.

Entering a master’s degree program at UC San Diego, while working at LANL full-time is a challenging endeavor. Whether you are taking one course, or planning to enroll in a degree program, you should consult your supervisor and work with the graduate program coordinator for admission requirements, course planning, and general academic advice. Currently, DLMP classes are available to LANL employees only.

GETTING STARTED

The first step towards succeeding in your Distance Learning Program is to become acquainted with the LANL site coordinator, Ellie Vigil at 505-667-2818. She can assist you with eligibility and funding questions.  To select coursework, you should work directly with the UC San Diego DLMP coordinator, Gabrielle Coulousi at 858-534-8558. Once you have selected a course, and the instructor has agreed to teach in the DLMP, you may choose to enroll as a concurrent enrollment student or as a Structural Engineering Master’s degree program student.

UC San Diego Extension:

Many students begin taking classes concurrently while waiting to be admitted to the degree program. You may be allowed to transfer up to 18 units of credit (4, 4-unit courses) for post-baccalaureate work taken through Extension enrollment prior to admission to a graduate program. Check with the graduate adviser before taking a course through Extension to establish that it is transferable to a degree program. Contact the DLMP coordinator Gabrielle Coulousi for more information.

Continuing Enrollment in UC San Diego Master’s Degree Program:

After you have been accepted to a degree program through the Graduate Division, you may enroll as a continuing student. Application information for admission to a graduate program at UC San Diego may be obtained visiting the Graduate Division website, or by going to the Structural Engineering website.

STUDENT INFORMATION

REQUESTING CLASSES

The Distance Learning Program is customized to fit your needs, within the Structural Engineering Master’s degree with Specialization in Structural Health Monitoring.  Begin by meeting with the Education Program Leader for your site to discuss funding.  Work with your direct supervisor to ensure your course plan will be supported and then contact the graduate program coordinator to determine appropriate course choices.

The best way to determine appropriate course choice is to work with the staff graduate adviser for your program. You will find descriptions of courses in the UC San Diego Course Catalog. Another source of information for current course offerings would be the Structural Engineering webpage.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

Registration for students in a degree program:
Students that have been admitted to a degree program are responsible for understanding information about registration on the Office of the Registrar. Please see the Key Dates section, to the left of this page,  for specific registration dates.

Transcripts for students matriculated in a degree program can be ordered through the Office of the Registrar at the end of each quarter (see below for Extension transcript information).

Registration, for students not admitted to a degree program, through UC San Diego Extension’s Concurrent Enrollment:
All students enrolling through concurrent enrollment are responsible for knowing information presented on the Extension website.

Deadlines for turning in your enrollment form is two weeks prior to the start of instruction but it is strongly recommended that you turn in your registration form as soon as your course is approved for the DLMP. This time is needed to allow your enrollment information to be processed, computer account to be set up to provide access to the course recordings, and to be added to the course web site by the time classes begin. Because you are not a matriculated student, you will have to be added to the course website manually by the instructor. Send your completed registration form to Gabrielle Coulousi (858-534-8558) at UC San Diego.

* Enrollment Applications: Complete a UC San Diego Concurrent Enrollment form for each class you wish to take. All DLMP courses are available for concurrent enrollment. Fill in the information requested and sign the form. Do not fill in the instructor’s signature or the department approval, the program coordinator will complete this information when your request is received.

* Payment of Fees: The amount you pay depends on the number of course units in which you will enroll (scroll to Tuition and Fees). You may pay either by check or credit card.  A representative from UC Extension will contact you directly to obtain your credit card information after your completed application is submitted to the our office. Your credit card will not be charged until the enrollment process is complete.

* Withdrawal from Courses: The deadline to drop and receive a refund for course withdrawals minus a $25 processing fee for each course and less any non-refundable fees is the 2nd Friday of each quarter. A request to withdraw from a course must be received in writing (by mail, fax, email or in person) at the UC San Diego Extension office or to the DLMP coordinator by the published final day for schedule adjustment (add or drop) deadline. The deadline to drop a course without a “W” appearing on your transcript is the 4th Friday of each quarter. The deadline to drop a course with a “W” appearing on your transcript is the 9th Friday of each quarter. If you drop a class without notifying your site coordinator, you may receive an “F” on your transcript and be responsible for tuition charges

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

The Distance Learning Master’s Program staff is happy to assist you in making your distance learning education a positive experience. We will try to do everything we can to implement course selections, streamline registration, and assist with obtaining faculty signatures on various forms. It is your responsibility, however, to know the deadlines, request the proper forms, and allow the DLMP staff sufficient lead-time to obtain the appropriate signatures.  Plan ahead.

QUIZZES AND EXAMS

Most midterm and final examinations are taken at LANL with a proctor. Occasionally an instructor will request that you come to the UC San Diego campus to take an exam, or for a final project with an oral presentation. Request for alternate exam and quiz times can be requested to accommodate work obligations, but the instructor is not required to approve such requests.  Please provide the Education Program Leader at LANL with a schedule of all your exams to ensure a proctor is appropriately scheduled. The proctor will forward completed exams to the instructional staff. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that each page is  is labeled with the student’s name, the page number and the course number and that submitted assignments received by the instructor are legible and can be accurately read by instructional staff.
