Engineering Institute Los Alamos National Laboratory at UC San Diego
History + Background
Established in 2003, the Engineering Institute is an education and research partnership between the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. The Institute aims to attract, educate and retain a technical workforce relevant to the Lab’s mission of enhancing global security; and to advance research for management of critical infrastructure in the civil and defense sectors.
Since 2003, the Los Alamos National Laboratory has funded numerous collaborative research projects that involve UCSD faculty members and graduate students from the structural engineering (SE), mechanical and aerospace engineering (MAE), electrical and computer engineering (ECE), and computer science and engineering (CSE) departments. In addition to their faculty advisor, Lab staff provide additional mentoring for these students when they visit Los Alamos. To date, more than 60 students have graduated from this program, and over 20 of them have been recruited to work in the DoE Labs.
Our Mission + Technical Focus
Our Mission is to develop a comprehensive and coordinated approach for conducting mission-driven, multidisciplinary engineering research and recruiting, revitalization and retention of the current and future staff necessary to support LANL’s diverse technology portfolio.
Our technical focus is multidisciplinary engineering science that integrates advanced predictive modeling, novel sensing systems and new developments in information technology.
