Charles R. (Chuck) Farrar, Ph. D., PE: Chuck Farrar has over 35 years ofexperience at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). He is currently the directorof LANL’s Engineering Institute.  While at LANL, he earned a Ph.D. in civilengineering from the University of New Mexico in 1988. The first ten years of hisLANL career focused on performing experimental and analytical structural dynamics studies for a wide variety of systems including nuclear power plantstructures subject to seismic loading, and weapons components subject to various portions of their stockpile-to-target loading environments.  Currently, his researchinterests focus on developing integrated hardware and software solutions to structural health monitoring problems and the development of damage prognosistechnology. The results of this research have been documented in over 400 refereed journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, and Los Alamos reports.  He has given numerous keynote lectures at international conferences, and authored bookentitled Structural Health Monitoring A Machine Learning Perspective.  In 2000 hefounded the Los Alamos Dynamics Summer School. His work has been recognizedat LANL through his reception of the inaugural Los Alamos Fellows Prize forTechnical Leadership and by the Structural Health Monitoring community throughthe reception of the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in Structural HealthMonitoring.  He is currently working jointly with engineering faculty at University of California, San Diego to develop the Los Alamos/UCSD Engineering Institute. This initiative is also developing a formal, degree-granting educational program innondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. Additional professionalactivities include an associated editor position for the journal EarthquakeEngineering and Structural Dynamics, and the development of a structural health monitoring short course that has been offered 40+ times in association withconferences and to industry and government agencies in Asia, Australia, Europe andthe U.S. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers,American Society of Civil Engineers, Society for Experimental Mechanics and aLos Alamos National Laboratory Fellow.
