    Biography

    Adam J. Wachtor graduated with honors from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. in Engineering Physics with an emphasis in Fluid Mechanics.  He then received his M.Sc. in Computational and Experimental Turbulence from Chalmers University of Technology.  Adam completed his Ph.D. work at the University of California, Irvine, while conducting research as a Graduate Research Associate at LANL on coarse-grain numerical simulation of turbulent mixing.  During his Ph.D. career, Adam was also a visiting Graduate Student Researcher at the Université de Poitiers, a Henry Samueli Endowed Fellow, U.S. Department of Education GAANN Fellow, and won the Margaret Burbidge Award for Best Experimental Research from the California Division of the American Physical Society.  Adam is currently an R&D Engineer at LANL, where his research interests include experimental and numerical investigations of turbulent mixing, engineering design, non-destructive evaluation, and studies in additive manufacturing to evaluate material properties, improve in-process diagnostics, and demonstrate closed-loop feedback control frameworks to detect and correct part failures.  In 2019, Adam was awarded Laboratory Directed Research and Development – Early Career Research funding for In-process, Full Part Defect Detection for Additive Manufacturing.  In addition to his research interests, he also co-directs the Los Alamos Dynamics Summer School, is an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University, and actively serves the LANL student and early-career staff communities.
